Intelligent Design, frequently labeled as the Argument from Design or the Teleological Argument in Western philosophy of religion, has a long history in pre-enlightenment philosophy as one of the standard "proofs of God."

That's one meaning that could be given to the term Intelligent Design. The recent controversy, however, is over a critique of evolutionary theory called by the same name.
